Thinkpad E530 I5-3210M More RAM + Crap Battery.

2014-08-12, 12:41 PM

Hi,

I have a Thinkpad E530 I5-3210M.

I am getting sick of having to reboot it constantly due to it running out of ram and then the OS goes slower and slower until it locks up. (Such and Such is not responding etc).

It can even do this from a fresh boot.

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM.

CPU-Z Says it currently has the following.

---

DIMM # 1

SMBus address 0x52

Memory type DDR3

Module format SO-DIMM

Manufacturer (ID) Samsung (CE00000000000000)

Size 4096 MBytes

Max bandwidth PC3-12800 (800 MHz)

Part number M471B5273DH0-CK0

Serial number 967FCE5D

Manufacturing date Week 17/Year 12

Number of banks 8

Nominal Voltage 1.50 Volts

EPP no

XMP no

AMP no

---

Questions:

1. Spec's say maximum RAM is 8GB total? Yet I see some eBay sellers selling 16GB kit's for this model. What is the MAX RAM for this machine?

2. Can someone recommend a good place to buy? (I am in Australia).

I would prefer to run a matched pair of sticks, even if I have to buy two and ditch the original.

On a second unrelated note. (Terrible Battery Run time).

The battery worked great on this machine for the first 3 days giving 8+ hours run time.

Then the run time took a huge dive. less then half and then less then a quarter.

Currently run time is only a little over 2 hours when fully charged. :(

I have tried replacing the battery with a brand new OEM one and no difference.

I tried updating the bios and run time actually got worse.

I tried cycling the battery and meter and run time again got worse.

I have tried reseting the power management setting. Still nothing.

Is there some strange issue with this model?

The first 3 days were a great testament as to the good battery life / run time that the machine is capable of.

But then. disaster?

Any fix for this?

Any help appreciated.

.-.-.

So no replies to my original post in years :(

So I will answer my own question in hopes it will help others.

The machine does infact support 2x 8GB ram. (Total 16GB).

Even though the manufacturer spec's say max of 8GB total.

I also put a Solid State HDD in as well. Both Ram and HDD are Cruical brand.

The Laptop now works and boots up mega fast. Well worth the upgrade.

This old laptop works as good as a new model speed wise with these upgrades.

In fact I have bought 4x more of these laptops cheap second hand and did the exact same upgrades and am very happy with them.

My next project is to locate i7 CPU's for them as they are socketted.

And to look into AC WiFi internal cards that are compatible.

Any advice appreciated.

Your best bet would be a i7-3612QM or i7-3632QM, both are 35W TDP Quad Cores.

Make sure you clean the old thermal paste and buy a new high quality thermal paste. I'm lately using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and I'm more than happy with it...
