ThinkPad P53 low brightness on hybrid graphic BIOS setting

2021-01-14, 17:18 PM

Hi all,

I've just received my P53 with Innolux N156HCE-GN1 screen - 500nit option. Screen seemed to be darker than my P50 LP156WF6-SPB1 (rated for 300 nits).

For the test i've downloaded some light measuring app for my phone - i am fully aware, that it's not lab-quality light meter, i just wanted to have some point of reference.

So, on my P50 with 300 nit screen app is reporting around 400 lux (full brightness, white screen). At the same time with same condition (full brightness, white screen) app is reporting ~300lux. I've found someone with similar issue here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile-Workstations/Thinkpad-P53-Screen-Brightness-issue-Windows-10/m-p/5014387 and tried to set BIOS to use Nvidia graphic only and after restart screen is as bright as i would expect from 500 nits screen and also app is reporting ~600 lux.

I've tried to disable any kind of power saving option in Intel graphic settings but it's not showing any results. I am testing on 230W AC adapter.

I've also tried to use drivers from Intel site, not from Lenovo - no difference here. Brigthness is not changing dependend on image brightness, HDR option in Windows settings is also disabled. Every possible BIOS/Windows/driver update was installed.

Any ideas how to keep max brightness with hybrid graphic setting?

I tried to dig here and there in settings, i've unplugged batteries (both CMOS and main battery) for few minutes but issue is still there. It's basically like i have 2 brightness levels less when both graphics are in use.

I've also tried to mess with some BIOS settings, just to see if it could possibly help in any way, but no luck there.

Edit: just tried under latest LTS ubuntu running from pendrive - full brightness with "switchable graphic" setting in BIOS, seems like Intel driver issue then...
