Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 - Type 40AN went up in smoke ...

2021-01-28, 3:56 AM

ThinkPad Workstation Stats:

  • P1 (Type 20MD, 20ME) Laptop (ThinkPad)
  • Intel(R) Core(TM) Í7-8850H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz
  • 32.0 GB (31.6 GB usable)
  • Windows 10 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Dock Stats:

Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 - Type 40AN ... All the latest drivers are installed:

  • Thunderbolt Firmware Update Utility for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad P1
  • Intel Thunderbolt Software for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad P1
  • Dock HW Driver
  • Dock FW

Issue:

I have a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2 - Type 40AN Serial Number = ZJT074ND.  I have had multiple monitor issues with this thing since I got it.

Today,    "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen2 / Workstation Dock Firmware Update Tool - 10 [64] - 3.1.67 ... Successfully installed: 1/27/2021 3:05 PM"    on my machine. About an hour, or so later, both external 27" monitors blacked out.  Then, electrical smoke started coming up from my dock.  It has been set up, connected, and running untouched since a little after my order date of 7/24/20.

What is it with TB technology?  I bought this expensive "BRICK" because I wanted cutting edge technology, but all I I got was a big load of trouble.  I cannot run my business using unreliable technology. I paid about $400.00 for a piece of junk.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Extremely Unhappy Consumer !

That is too bad, but electronic components are going to fail, with some choosing to bow out sooner than others.    The good news is that your dock has a 3-year warranty per the Tech Specs found here, so you should contact Lenovo for a replacement.

Enter your dock's serial number at the link below to check warranty status and open a ticket.

I think the dock is not compatible with the P1. Not enough juice for your laptop. You need the 235w version. If this is the case (specs don't lie), you lucked out for a few months but destroyed the dock yourself? Imbalance between draw of laptop and what dock can put out.

Also, $400 is too much. Can have that dock for about $200 new (same as what you paid elsewhere) from many dealers.

I am sure it’s comparable according to the 40ANY230US compatibility list, a Lenovo rep, and the split Y cable one at 170, and the other at 65. I think it’s just a defective technology, based on the number of rants in the Lenovo forums, citing no viable solution has been presented. I researched it for ours. My initial symptoms of monitors losing power matches exactly the dozens of rants I read. I think the USB C option technology is I bit more ironed out. Thunderbolt needs a bit more R & D. Thanks for your honest input. BTW, which dock version to think I have?  The 135!

If you got the 230W version it should be compatible. I thought you have the 135W version one. I would see a refund if I were you then.
