Lenovo Thinkpad W510 4391-BY7 with ADATA SU750 SSD?

2021-07-02, 7:55 AM

Hi

I have just upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad W510 4391-BY7 to SSD, model ADATA SU750 SSD. When I tired to install Windows on it, I got error "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu". I tried to put an OS on the SSD through another computer and boot it, and it didn't work (The computer just rebooted itself). I tried to connect the SSD externally using a SATA to USB adapter, and it booted. I supsect that the SATA port of my computer is not compatible with that SSD. Am I right?

Another two important facts:

  1. When this SSD is connected, the computer start up is very very slow.
  2. Everything worked well with a different SSD drive.

Thank's

Re:Lenovo Thinkpad W510 4391-BY7 with ADATA SU750 SSD?

Hi AviadBagno,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The Adata SU750 SSD is a 2.5” 7mm form factor SATA 6Gb/s (Also called SATA 3), and all SATA 3 is backwards compatible with older SATA 1 & 2 (1.5Gb/s & 3Gb/s). The only difference is that it will run at lower speeds.  Seeing as the Thinkpad W510 has SATA 2 (3Gb/s) I don't see why it won't work, it might be a limitation with the SSD itself and not particularly the SATA cable used or the most logical conclusion I can come to is that the SATA cable is faulty somehow.

Regards

HiI don't think that the SATA cable is faulty, because I managed to attach a different SSD without problem. (I forgot to mention it in the original post, so I added it now)

Hello,

Have you checked with ADATA to see if a firmware update is needed for the SU750 SSD in order for it to work with a ThinkPad W510?

Also, does the W510 have the latest BIOS firmware installed?
