Thinkstation d20 max ram frequency?

2019-07-29, 22:02 PM

Hello, I'll like to upgrade my system memory on D20 to 48Gb . I found some cheap ddr3 ecc SK Hynix Elpida DDR3-1866 PC3-14900 ecc 240-Pin. Does anyone knows if they will work at all, obviously at lower speed, like 1333Mhz?

Thanks

This will greatly depend on the CPU(s) installed in your system, so it would be good if you could provide that information.

Obviosuly, since the memory controller is integrated into the CPU, that's going to be a major factor in determining what memory speed can be achieved.  But, Nehalem CPUs had some additional limitations in terms of memory support, whereas Westmere CPUs had many of those restrictions removed.

Do you have the vendor PN for the exact DIMMs you're looking to purchase?

Hi, thanks for the answer. I  gonna put in 2 super cheap xeon x5670 , taking off the  XEON E5620 it comes with the machine.

I read something around, the x5670 are supposed to be Westmere right?

Looking for this Apple SK Hynix Elpida 48Gb (12 x 4Gb) DDR3-1866 PC3-14900 ECC 240-Pin RAM Memory

or this Hynix hmt41gr7afr8a-pb ecc - 2rx8 pc3l-12800r-11-12-b1 (

well, I ended up winning an auction for 48Gb (6x8gb) shipped for 60 euro, on each module is written:

SK hynix 8GB 2Rx8 PC3L -12800R -11-12-B1

HMT41GR7AFR8A-PB T8 AF 1402

And i'm planning on installing this on a dual x5670 setup.

This should be the specs page (I read "backward compatible", that makes me feel good)

https://www.skhynix.com/products.view.do?vseq=1025&cseq=75

I guess for the price I'll risk, I can always resell them or perhaps build another system in the future .

Anyway on this page (sorry, in italian), I can see that crucial suggests as supported very similar memories for the D20, also DDR3 PC3-12800

https://it.crucial.com/ita/it/aggiornamento-compatibile-per/Lenovo/thinkstation-d20

I'll post updates when I'll be able to test .. thanks for the kind reply, again

Yes the X5670 is a Westmere based CPU.  So that should remove a lot of the channel limitations I mentioned earlier.  The only thing that comes to mind that could affect your memory speed is if any of those DIMMs are quad-ranked.  I think the MRC might clock the DIMMs down if it detects any of those, but my memory on this is admittedly a little fuzzy.

Given the specs of the DIMMs you won, I'm going to guess none of them would be quad ranked.  So in that case I think you're final limiting factor will be the max memory speed supported by the x5670 CPUs, which is 1333MHz.

wow, so many things to know :) This ranking thing is totally new to me...

Luckily it seems that these are Dual ranked modules
