T480s Synaptics Metallica MIS Fingerprint Reader Linux Support (06cb:009a)

2020-10-01, 9:01 AM

This also goes out to the guys at fedora (hopefully reading through)...

Any news on this particular device getting supported by fedora (or any linux for that matter)?

06cb:009a Synaptics, Inc. Metallica MIS Touch Fingerprint Reader

From what I know, this device got included in a whole bunch of Thinkpads beside T480(s), reverse engineering is stuck (or lets say almost dead due to data encryption from what I read)

see https://github.com/nmikhailov/Validity90/

As welcomed the enhanced support for prometheus fp readers (that followed) might be, we are still missing this one out.

Is there any chance Lenovo is keeping up some pressure to Synaptics on that device as well?

Since the new cooperation of Fedora and Lenovo is ongoing, there must be something you guys may achieve that leads us to publications like that:

Here seems to be a working driver part validating fingerprints but lacks storing new fprints:

It's a shame, that I haven't been able to use parts of my beloved thinkpad from day one on :-(

I payed extra for this configuration due to my positive user experience with fingerprint readers since my T420s (a device which I still love and which is still in usage).

Never expected Lenovo to lose one of the best linux hw-support I've experienced through the years.

Hi @groening

Afraid Synaptics don't have plans to do Linux support for this device as it's a "Match on Host" device and therefore much more problematic to support under Linux than the Prometheus "Match on Chip" device.

We've moved all our Linux certified platforms to use MoC. The only caveat I know of is some of this years L series have the device on it - otherwise all 2020 models should work

On my X1 Yoga 3rd Gen with Ubuntu 20.04 (here is what I see with lsusb: Bus 001 Device 008: ID 06cb:009a Synaptics, Inc.), the Fingerprint Reader is working after following the instructions on https://github.com/uunicorn/python-validity

Hope that helps.
