Update RAM of Legion Y520

Good afternoon. I would like to augment the RAM on my Legion Y520. My system is as follow:

Legion Y520-15IKBN Laptop (Lenovo) - Type 80WK I7 CPU

Serial Number: xxxxx

I have two questions.

1) in your site I found that the motherboard (LENOVO LNVNB161216 NO DPK version) can support up to 16 GB RAM but in the manual it is written that it can support up to 32GB RAM. Which of the two is correct?

2) I did not find any manual about the motherboard. What is the maximum speed of the RAM the motherboard can support? The 8GB RAM DDR4 SODIMM I found in the PC works at  2400 Mhz.

Thanks for your reply

Re:Update RAM of Legion Y520

Welcome to the community forum.

According to Lenovo_Legion_Y520_15_Spec.PDF the RAM specifications are "32GB max / DDR4 2400MHz, two 260-pin SO-DIMM sockets."

Crucial's website confirms this https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/lenovo/legion-y520-15ikbn

128 gig its based on the memory controller on the cpu https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/148263/intel-core-i7-8086k-processor-12m-cache-up-to-5-00-ghz.html

These Y520 machines have two DIMM slots, so there is no way, that I am aware of, to achieve 128GB.

Also, according to the platform spec sheet linked in by @hausman the OP's machine has an i7-7700HQ CPU, not an i7-8086K, a desktop CPU, as per your link.

Ref: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/97185/intel-core-i7-7700hq-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-80-ghz.html, which specifies 64GB as max RAM supported. Not sure if the Y520 chipset supports that much, but certainly would not go to 128GB.

Please be careful with the information/links you provide so as to minimize confusion.

Regards.

80WK is the Y520 machine "type" number. There is no such Intel i7-"80WK".

I have never seen any 64GB laptop SO-DIMMs. If you have, please provide a link to such.

Regardless, I highly doubt the Y520 supports DIMMs larger than 32GB, and that is only based upon the Intel CPU specs. The system board chipset may well limit support to 16GB DIMMs.

Please be careful with the info you post to avoid confusion.

Re:Update RAM of Legion Y520

7th Gen CPUs cannot use 32GB DIMMs.  This is an Intel limitation.  If you have a 7th gen CPU, as the type indicates, 2X16 is the maximum.
