Lenovo IdeaPad 530s (81H1001UFR) Linux support

2019-01-15, 17:58 PM

I would like to buy a laptop from the IdeaPad 530s series (14 ", AMD).

But I want to be able to use linux, I wondered if there was an appropriate driver support (touchpad, sound, fingerprint reader, ...)

In addition I am interested in all the information about linux on this laptop.

thanks in advance.

I have the same interest, Ideapad 530S-14ARR (Ryzen 5). Current offer at Cdiscount.com is too good :-)

My preliminary plan would be to :
o   setup machine with Windows first, update BIOS

o   disable Safe Boot in BIOS

o   boot with USB  (Linux Mint), probably prepare a USB mouse if touchpad does not work

o   change size of Windows partion to smaller, maybe 50GB, to free space

o   install Mint to this free space as dual boot

o   install Linux kernel 4.19.x (newest) for touchpad to work

... and maybe something else I have forgotten

OK, I received my brand new Ideapad 530S-14ARR today!

I did the setup of Windows 10 as a new machine, and updated BIOS to latest version (...50..), disabled Secure boot and Fastboot, repartitioned the SSD, with 50GB left for Windows.

Booted to Linux Mint Live USB, 19.2 Cinnamon :   touchpad does not work,  wifi does not work :-(

Made a USB stick with Ubuntu 18.10 :  touchpad works,  wifi does not work  :-(

To complicate things I do not have a USB mouse, nor a USB-Ethernet adapter ....

How to proceed?

I was able to install Linux Mint using just tab, arrows, enter ....  and then updated to kernel 4.18.0-14

My mobile phone provided network connection through USB tethering.

Now the touchpad works. But still no wifi, nor bluetooth

To make Wi-FI work you need to disable kernel module "ideapad_laptop"

Touchpad works on Ubuntu from start, on other distribs you need to install "i2c-amd-mp2" module

To complete the story, wifi and bluetooth now works, thanks to JeremyB over at forums.linuxmint.com !

In terminal, do

sudo apt install git dkms build-essential
git clone -b 4.18 https://github.com/jeremyb31/ideapad-laptop.git
sudo dkms add ./ideapad-laptop
sudo dkms install ideapad-laptop/1.0
echo "options ideapad_laptop override_has_hw_rfkill_switch=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ideapad_laptop.conf

Now I can migrate all my stuff from my old Macbook Pro (mid-2010) :-)

Thank you for this information. I have been tracking down a lot of this stuff today, and it is good to see something all in one place.
