Flex 3-1580 with issues

I have a Flex 3-1580 80R40007US.

Running Windows 10 Home. Long out of warranty.

I have upgraded it to the "unofficial" 16GB of RAM permitted by the latest version of the BIOS. It is also running a 1TB Samsung SSD.

After installing one of the UEFI driver updates (I presume) I started receiving this error message when restarting the machine to install the updates:

"Capsule Failed please redo the process!!!!!!!BIOS Capsule updated failed !!!!!
Please reboot the system and reflash the BIOS !!!!!"

I was never able to resolve this issue but the error message eventually went away.

A few months later the motherboard died. Just 100% solid dead. I ordered a replacement motherboard with same model # and installed it. Laptop worked fine. However, the MTM and Lenovo SN in the BIOS are now registered as "INVALID" and I cannot use the Lenovo website's or Vantage's automatic update features. No idea how to fix this.

A while later I start getting blue screens of death with the errors:

DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE
or
VIDEO SCHEDULER INTERNAL ERROR

I decided to refresh Windows 10 and make a clean start, since I was using the same install between motherboards.

I updated the video drivers and the UEFI driver 9YCN39WW and now it crashes even more. It crashes so much that windows 10 decided to lock me out because I restarted the computer so often (apparently it thought I was trying to brute force the system, which is really dumb because I entered the correct password every time...)

I tried disabling the UEFI drivers or restoring the windows default, but I can't revert the BIOS to previous settings.

After waiting the obligatory 2 hours, I accessed Windows 10 and have initiated another reset to original settings. However, I'm getting rather frustrated with this machine and can't find reliable information on how to fix any of these problems.

Re:Flex 3-1580 with issues

Resetting Windows 10 was met with a crash and a VIDEO SCHEDULER INTERNAL ERROR blue screen of death.

Reboot is followed by:

"Capsule Failed please redo the process!!!!!!!BIOS Capsule updated failed !!!!!
Please reboot the system and reflash the BIOS !!!!!"

Re:Flex 3-1580 with issues

Hello @EricWedde

Did you attempt to update the BIOS?

The MTM on the new board is most likely different or may not apply on the replacement one. At one point, the reason why MTM and the SN is showing is invalid is because the motherboard was replaced and it's not done by any authorized Lenovo facility/tech.

Likewise, you can share the FRU number of the new board for comparison.

Regards.

Re:Flex 3-1580 with issues

I attempted to update the UEFI drivers prior to the death of the first motherboard. This generated the issues with the capsule failure errors.

Is there a solution to get this currently disfunctional laptop running again without taking it to an authorized someone who will charge lots of money to maybe fix things? (Because I'm not doing that.)

Hi

It needs a new TATTOO.

is not for your model, but there may be something you can glean.

Re:Flex 3-1580 with issues

The tools for changing BIOS information seem to be designed for other computers, and I don't know of anything for a Flex 3.

I found that disabling the graphic card drivers solved most of the problems. However, windows 10 keeps wanting to reinstall the drivers for me, which makes things crash again. I installed the latest Nvidia drivers and now Windows 10 disables them at startup (code 43), which is actually good since it hasn't crashed since.

Watching fixit videos suggests that the BIOS issues are causing the graphics card issues (integrated GeForce 940M). I can't reflash the BIOS because it says the version I want to install is already installed. At this point the computer acts like nothing is wrong, it just won't run the graphics card. Hey, that's a step up! Still runs Minecraft.

Will see if more problems develop. Looking for a way to reflash the BIOS.

Re:Flex 3-1580 with issues

Hi

There is PowerShell command to stop drivers installling / updating.

Memory Loss, me not the PC.

I have a HP and once upon a time...

It made 15 failed attempts to install a touchpad driver, in a single day.

PS commands solved that.
