Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Upon pressing Start Button, the Start Button as well as the Battery and ON leds (white) all light for about 4 seconds and then turn OFF.  The START problem was proceeded by a "Cannot Write to NNNNN" error when turning unit off but always shut down ok.  I have read and tried "Power Drain", CMOS Battery Removal, HARD Reset, Start on Power Adapter only...no battery.  Symptoms remain the same... HDD does not spin-up,  Screen does not Light up, Fans do not spin, doesn't maks a sound or light up Keyboard...   one day it ran the next day it didn't....:smileymad:

Battery is fully charged to 7.7vdc,  have replaced & re-replaced RAM but nothing to date has made a difference.  Running Win10...  Have also tried to Boot from Bootable USB Thumb drive I created when I first bought the unit. Don't think it even sees it.  No luck there either.  Don't know if replacing the HDD will gain me anything at this point.

Of course this machine is 6 mo. out of Warranty.  Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Hi Dave,

Yes, I have seen the eBay MB.   I agree with you about having it checked out. I'll be checking out the local facilities you suggested.  Would like to find someone familiar or trained / experienced with the y50-70's.

Thanks again for all your help...:smileyhappy:

Phil

Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Hi NRZ-Detc60 and welcome to the community,

Beside the start button is a small NOVO button.  Have you tried to start the notebook by pressing that button with the machine off?  Does a menu come up? Does the screen stay on at that menu?

Regards,

Dave

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Thanks Dave,  had not tried but when I do the keyboard flashes briefly,  BATTERY & RUN leds light for 3 seconds.  No Screen, Fans, HDD...  Does not appear to get into POST...

I would expect the HDD should spool up as soon as power is applied to read boot tracks but not even getting there.  ????  Bad HDD ?  If it cand boot on the drive should look for CD and/or USB.  Haven't tried the boot CD.  Will do that next...

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Won't boot from CD or Thumb Drive...

Appears the WD 2.5" drive (wd10s21x) has had a lot of problems.

[https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Y50-Hybrid-HDD-WDC-WD10S21X-rife-with-errors-freezing-and/td-p/2092276}

Is their an equivalent compatible Lenovo replacement for it ?

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Yes, the hard drive should spin up right away, the fan should start up also.  It's a little hard to see from your pic, but are you using an external monitor?

Is that a straight platter drive in there or a hybrid drive with the small SSD that acts like a cache? There were some problems with the hybrid drives. Yours should have come with the hybrid drive.  I don't have my Z50-70 anymore, I donated it to a family that needed a computer, but mine would boot a DVD Live Linux if I wanted it to.  I don't remember whether I tried to boot from USB.

Your default boot order should have USB Boot first in line, then PX Boot to Lan, then EFI, then Windows Boot Manager, unless you changed it from before.

Dave

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

It is the HiBrid...  I'm not sure that this drive is good at this point.

Support note above sounds like it does not address the drive reliability issues ?  Any information on reliability if Win10 updates/BIOS are completed per Document ID: HT104446 ?

Any other HDD compatible (Seagate ST2000LX001 for example) options for this machine ?

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Your drive could be bad, but the machine should still turn on and stay on even if the drive was bad.  It should not be turning off after a few seconds.  You should also be able to get into the bios without the drive being in.

I think you have problems with something else besides the hard drive. The notebook should give you an error such as No bootable device with the drive being out.

With that said, you could replace the hard drive with an SSD, here's a short thread about what will fit.  thread

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Thanks again Dave....

You're right, even if HDD is bad should have screen, kbd, fans..and stay ON...  The ON circuitry should latch the machine ON unless  ??? Low Power...  Bad BIOS Battery...  No RAM....  I would think.

Aside from the "Cannot Write to nnnnn" error at shutdown there were on other symptoms prior to this problem.  I'm not sure if this error was a RAM or HDD error however.  I'm running out of ideas.  :smileyindifferent:

Looked at the drive thread and the 120ssd/1tb drive looks cool.

Options...?  Factory repair possible ?  Parts purchase from Lenovo ?

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

The nnnn error just means that a command was sent and executed by the application, but the specified script did not complete.  The app will cancel the process identified by process ID #nnnnn.

If you take all the ram out and turn the machine on, does the notebook bring back any beeps?

Maybe have a local repair shop look at it, that would be a lot cheaper than sending it in to the factory.

Re: Y50-70 will NOT Power up...

Good Idea...

RAM removed there is no BEEP....same symptoms as before.  Maybe Bad BIOS.  I assume BIOS requires a MB replacement ?

Battery is 7.67.  Can't think of much else.

Can have flat fee techs work on machine.  Would like to find someone familiar with this machines and problems if possible.

Do you know what factory costs is for out of warranty work? Is there a stateside factory facility or just approved shops?

Thanks Much
