I have not been able to identify how to get my yoga 9i out of standby mode and keep reverting to turning the laptop off completely and then turning it on again - why rather defeats the purpose of standby.  Any suggestions

If this is the case where you put the laptop on sleep by closing the lid, only to realise later on it won't wake, then welcome to the club.
I have found two recent discussions on this topic (see the links below) and so far it is not clear what is the solution.
You can still try some things, but in my case nothing has helped so far.
