Re: Loose hinges on Lenovo Thinkpad T410s

I recently bought a 'professionally' refurbished T410s and love the machine but the screen is quite loose. The issue is not the opening and closing of the screen but the fact that when opened it wobbles a good few mm either way.

Looking at the silver hinges it seems that partly these hinges are loose but also part of the give is within the hinges.

I have never taken apart a laptop before but might be up for trying to replace these hinges if (a) that is the right thing to do and (b) someone can help me with how I would buy these. Any ideas?

Also, I don't support there is anything simpler to be done such as tightening up some screws somewhere?

Thanks!

Re: Loose hinges on Lenovo Thinkpad T410s

Hello and welcome,

You may find the Hardware Maintenance Manual and this page useful.  They both have instructions on accessing the hinges.

I'd be inclined to open up the machine first and verify that the hinges are actually worn.  It may be that most of the play is due to a loose or missing screw.  Or two.  Loose hinges aren't likely to hurt anything.  More of an annoyance.  Loose screws could lead to damage.

You should be able to find the hinges @ eBay or elsewhere.  I don't know this vendor, this is just an example:

Re: Loose hinges on Lenovo Thinkpad T410s

One caution: The T410s is not the easiest machine to take apart. The slim design complicates things a little. Also, hinges are not what I would suggest as a first project. The good news is that the only tool you really need is a screwdriver

See if you can get the Refurb seller to replace the hinges for you. Nothing like buggering up and new machine before you get to use it.

Re: Loose hinges on Lenovo Thinkpad T410s

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately the machine was shipped to me from Canada so I don't much fancy sending it back (I'm in the UK).

It sounds like I need to put a good few hours aside and carefully take it apart in the hope that it's loose screws rather than hinges. I'm sure I'll learn lots in the process!

Thanks for the warnings re slim form factor of T410s. I will report back if I have anything useful to add having tried it.

Re: Loose hinges on Lenovo Thinkpad T410s

I doubt it loose screws. They are usually a friction hinge and loose screw mounts would likey have wiggle back and front but tight after that slight movement. If you're going to tear it down I'd have a new set on hand to put in. Its a lot of work from what I have seen on other machines.

Other people can pipe in on this but its likely just plan worn out.

Re: Loose hinges on Lenovo Thinkpad T410s

It is probably not loose screws. Loose screws usually crack the case and frame

Re: Loose hinges on Lenovo Thinkpad T410s

Reanimating this thread as my T410s has a wobbly screen, which now has evolved into the hinge being sufficiently stiff (?) that it is beginning to pull the display surround apart if the lid is moved.

It's had to know what to do to fix this.

(1) Lenovo - I called but they don't seem to fix machines out of warranty, so this one's not possible as far as I know.

(2) Authorised service centre - not sure where these are, if they can do it etc. There doesn't seem to be a list on lenovo.com, when I called I was advised to google for the information. No idea how much it would cost, and how 'good' these places would be.

(3) DIY, but I must admit the guide (effectively the hardware maintenance manual) available here 'Hinge kit removal and installation' looks fairly daunting. Do you really have to disassemble so much of the laptop ?

I think I may be stuck with option 3, even if so, is any particular place more reputable / reliable for getting new hinges (which I assume I will need) than any other ? Oh option 4 as well :

(4) Give up, buy a new laptop.

I guess when I break my LCD attempting (3), (4) will follow :-)
