Re: M900 Tiny: Purchasing and upgrading questions

I am getting somewhat confused (sometimes it doesn't take much)

Ok 1st:  From Lenovo's website

Memory:

TINY FORM FACTOR WITHOUT SACRIFICING PERFORMANCE

The ThinkCentre M900 Tiny is everything that you need in a compact size: durable, manageable, expandable, flexible – do-able. Tiny form factor with the latest in Intel® Core™ processors and up to 16 GB of memory with two drive bays offer the performance and expandability you need.

Here it seems to indicate 16gb of memory which seems to be what is offered under customize

However here:

Tiny but Flexible

The ThinkCentre M900 Tiny fits just about anywhere, but is still flexible, offering one 2.5” bay or one M.2 slot for your choice of storage, and up to 16 GB of memory with expansion slots for up to 32 GB. The latest

It seems to be indicating 32 gb of memory does this mean Lenovo only offers up to 16 gb but you can put in 32 if you want to toss the supplied chips, It wouldn't be to bad if they offered the 16gb as 1 chip with the other one free but it seems the only option is 2x8, this seems kind of wasteful if you think at some time in the future you may want to upgrade to 32 GB

Is it possible to special order with 1 16gb chip and 1 open socket?

2nd: Drive bays

The 1st clip from the website above says 2 drive bays

The 2nd clip says 1 bay either a HD or SSD but not both

Which is it ?

From a youtube video of someone taking one apart it didn't really look like there was room for 2 bays but this is confusing.

Add ons:

From the manual and from other places on the web there seems to be a bunch of extras, some you can add at the time of purchase but I can find no listings on the website to buy them later, for example, dongles, the I/O box for HD or DVD, the dust shield, something in the manual about a battery etc.

Am I just not finding the right page?

Does anyone know if there are any plans to make it available with either a 1 TB HD or 1TB SSD ? Again is this something that can be special ordered ?

I am sure I will have other questions but this is a good start

Thanks for taking the time to respond your information will be of great value to me

All the Best,

Thanks

Bill

Re: M900 Tiny & VR

If you browse through this ThinkCentre sub-forum, you'll see many threads on adding 3rd-party memory, a SSD, a 2nd drive, graphics (to larger chassis systems), and even stronger 3rd-party power supply to Tower systems.   (I did all this myself, as I needed to max the memory and run 4 monitors for the work I did.)

As to your VR question.   For most apps that are PC intensive, the developer will publish their minimum PC requirements to ensure that the app will run adequately.   Additionally, you'd be better served searching a VR forum or the Graphics forum at Intel since they would including all manufacturers, not just Lenovo.

Re: M900 Tiny Questions

This did help, the pictures on the 2nd page made the drive bays very clear, the M.2 slot next to the memory slots which are both under the main drive bay. It did give some understanding that the bigger memory chips seem at least at this time are limited and hard to get so may be why lenovo doesn't offer bigger/better/more flexible options.  It seems the best way to go as far as memory and drive storage is to go the least possible and then do the upgrades to what you want later, for example go with 4gb memory and then upgrade to 1 16gb chip after purchase then if you want to go 32gb you only have to toss a 4gb chip. I may be off base here but it seems the way to go would be the M.2 1TB SSD card for the main drive (Not sure if this one would be combatable but:

SAMSUNG 960 PRO M.2 1TB NVMe PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V6P1T0BW

so again you would want to go with the least expensive (wasteful) drive option. Note: This is a new drive not released until 12/31/16 I may be wrong but this would be the fastest drive option, they have a 2TB option as well but its getting a bit pricy at that size)

Thanks for the Help

Bill

Re: M900 Tiny What Is it ?

The Hardware Maintenance manual can answer some questions.   The rear view of the product on pg 29 says it is a WiFi antenna cable connector ... available on some models.

Mod edit:  Please keep related posts together in the same thread (avoid fragmenting the forum.)  Ty.

Re: M900 Tiny What Is it ?

Thats what I thought it was, sort of looks like the wifi connector you see on many routers that use the little 90 degree ant. It does not appear to be used on the current model.  I guess they found a better way to go.

Re: M900 Tiny I/O box

I see a couple of I/O boxes on the US Lenovo website (strange these don't seem to be available on the Canadian website)

anyway they both seem to be just extra usb ports, serial ports etc, now there seems to be the option when buying the computer to add a dvd, I assume this is the expansion box that is shown in the youtube video that shows it can be used for a dvd or a hd I may be wrong on this, the website does not seem to list the dvd expansion box separatly.

Any insights on this ?

I am not sure if this video is for an older version or the M900

Thanks

Bill

Re: M900 Tiny I/O box

I'm not familiar with the expansion box myself, I would use a quality USB 3.0 hub to add more ports.   And if all you need is the occasional use of a CD/DVD drive, most people get a generic USB connected external drive to use on those occasions.

Re: M900 Tiny I/O box

The expansion boxes just adding ports I was not really very interested in, I already have a 13 port + 2 charge ports usb 3.0 hub but the idea of having the box that allowed for a dvd or hd was kind of appealing. Although its not really a "make or break" sort of thing lets face it you don't really use a cd/dvd very often these days.

Thanks

Re: M900 Tiny Customizing at time of purchase

I wonder if anyone has had any experience in customizing their M900 at the time of purchase with items outside the box? I know there are some selections you can make on the website but I am curious how open Lenovo is to making custom choices that are not selectable on the website and what others experiences were in doing that. I am not really looking for anything really weird mostly memory and SSD card. I plan to call Lenovo next week after the holidays are over and see but would like opinions if there are any. ie easy, open to mods, impossible take what you get.

Thanks

Bill
