X1 Carbon Gen 9 to 4k external monitor

Hi,

I'm receiving my X1 Carbon Gen 9 in the mail in a few days, and just had a few questions about connecting it to a display.

  1.  I have a 4k display at home which is currently hooked up to my Macbook pro using the provided USB-C cable. This cable is able to charge my laptop and power on the display at the same time. Additionally, the laptop is running on the charger and not the battery. Is there a similar feature on the X1C9? Will the laptop run on the charger when the battery is full?
  2. If I want to connect my own X1C9 to that display in lieu of the Macbook pro, should I use HDMI 2.0 or the USB-C cable? Will the USB-C cable even work since the x1c9 is a thunderbolt4?

Thanks!

Re:X1 Carbon Gen 9 to 4k external monitor

Let me also add, since USB-C on the X1C Gen 9 is Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4, it supports a wide variety of video out options (via DisplayPort Alt Mode) AND simultaneous charging profiles like Power Delivery (PD).

Yes, your 4k monitor, if it supports industry standards (which I imagine it does if you're using it the way you are with your Mac), will charge your X1 Carbon while receiving the video signal through one USB-C cable - even when the battery is full. I'm assuming your monitor is outputting at least 45W?

Using alt-display mode, I'm able to power 2 1440p monitors while charging my X1C Gen 9. I use Dell's U2721DE for comparison purposes.

Re:X1 Carbon Gen 9 to 4k external monitor

Will the battery stop charging when the laptop is full? Will the laptop run on the adapter instead of on the battery or thats a mac only feature? Lastly should I use USB-C or HDMI 2.0 to connect to my external display or it doesn't matter at all? cheers
